What is poetry?

What is poetry?

It is difficult to define. Poetry is an art, a form of expression, a lifestyle. During these past few weeks, our class has been studying poetry. For me, the beginning of our poetry unit this year has been wonderful. Poetry has always fascinated me due to its artistic, expressive, and mysterious nature. While being interested in poetry for a long time, I have learned more about it this year than ever before. I have discovered many things about poetry, but one of my most important ones is that poetry must be carefully edited and refined, not just scrambled thoughts on paper. Prior to this until, I had the impression that good poetry was disorganized and random thoughts jotted down on paper. While that is certainly a way of poetry, I have noticed a substantial increase in the quality of my work when editing it to a further extent. Overall, our poetry unit has been very informative and enjoyable, and I look forward to continuing it in the future.

I spread my arms wide

Surrendering to the magnificent power

I stand upon ancient earth

Worn by time

dictated completely

By the will of the tides

Jade-colored waves crash

Against the shore

Booming like the roar

Of lions

I am isolated

Yet

at home

A lone tree stands

in the middle of a snow covered field

It's branches barren

Swaying in the unforgiving

winds

Dead silence permeates

 throughout the land

The cold threatens

the wind howls
The echoes of creation ring

Throughout the land

Spontaneous bursts of energy

Explode without concern

Not trying to please

Life stories are told within seconds

The seconds are expanded to lifetimes

This is life

This is jazz.
