Today, I was gifted with the opportunity to see His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in person. Many monks and spiritualists congregated in honor of The Dalai Lama with hopes to further learn about the Buddha's teachings. However, it was not merely a lecture of the Dharma (or the Buddha's teachings), but a discussion about how we must cultivate and apply them and their energy for the benefit of all beings. It reminded me of a psychology or a philosophy class. Many of the Buddha's teachings are very psychological and based on human nature. It actually made me think of Thoreau. Many of the thoughts that he developed, were extremely similar to that of the Buddha's. For example, Thoreau stays that people are happier with only the bare necessities of life, and without the superfluous. The Buddha says that in order to attain enlightenment, we must rid ourselves of any attachment to material things, for they are but empty. Overall, today was without a doubt one of the most interesting and enlightening experiences of my life.
